A Review of Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Hydropower Reservoirs

چکیده

Hydroelectric reservoirs have environmental impacts as many other sources of energy. Regarding hydropower, these effects include flooding cultivated and forest areas, changes in water quality, negative on biodiversity, conflict with indigenous people fish migration. In the nineties, researchers put evidence another important impact dam construction: greenhouse gases generated by organic matter reservoir flooding. Scientists argue that like natural human bodies, hydropower emit biogenic into atmosphere. CO2 is Dominant Greenhouse Gas Emitted from Six Hydropower Reservoirs in Southeastern United States during Peak Summer Emissions

During August–September 2012, we sampled six hydropower reservoirs in southeastern United States for CO2 and CH4 emissions via three pathways: diffusive emissions from water surface; ebullition in the water column; and losses from dam tailwaters during power generation. Estimates of average areal emission rates of CO2 attributable to the six reservoirs (i.e., reservoir plus tailwater emissions)...

Reducing Australia’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Interim targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are essential to put Australia on track toward the deep emissions cuts required by 2050. This report fi nds that by 2020, emission reductions of greater than 30 per cent below 1990 levels are possible, but only with a wide range of concerted actions in the energy, industry and land-use sectors. If the contributions from energy effi ciency in th...

Greenhouse gas emissions from rice

Rice provides the staple food for over 60% of the world’s population. Globally 80% of rice is grown by small farmers in low income and developing nations, and in India rice farming is a key source of employment for the 60% of Indian workers still dependent on agriculture for work. Yet rice production is also an important source of greenhouse gas emissions, for example responsible for between 3 ...

Constraining future greenhouse gas emissions by a cumulative target.

B y 1994 all major industrialized nations, including the United States, had ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), yet 15 years later policymakers still debate how best to formulate emissions legislation. Article 2 of the UNFCCC calls for ‘‘stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations . . . at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interferenc...
